Welcome to the Neuropsychiatry and Psychiatric Practice of
Dr. Frans Hugo
Neuropsychiatry is a specialised branch of medicine that integrates elements of psychiatry and neurology to explore the complex relationship between brain function and behaviour. This interdisciplinary field focuses on understanding how neurological disorders influence mental health, aiming to diagnose and treat conditions that manifest both cognitive and emotional symptoms.
Psychiatry is a medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health and emotional disorders. Psychiatrists, who are medical doctors, utilise a variety of diagnostic tools, including medical laboratory tests, psychological assessments, and discussions with patients to understand their mental state. The field encompasses various treatment modalities such as medications, psychotherapy, and other psychosocial interventions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which an individual realises their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community.” This definition highlights the importance of mental health as more than just the absence of mental disorders, emphasising the ability to manage life’s challenges, work effectively, and contribute to society.
